Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite resin bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve their color, shape, length, or overall appearance. They are used to address discoloration that does not respond well to whitening, chipped or worn teeth, minor gaps, and slight irregularities in shape or proportion. A veneer covers only the visible front surface and requires minimal preparation of the underlying tooth.
Dr. Ali Almaawi, DDS, FICOI holds training through the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, which supports precision aesthetic work including veneer design. Treatment planning involves careful attention to tooth proportions, gum symmetry, and how the final result will look within the context of your full smile. We welcome new patients from Framingham, Natick, Hopkinton, Holliston, Southborough, and the MetroWest area for veneer consultations.
Porcelain vs. Composite Veneers
Porcelain Veneers
Fabricated in a dental laboratory from high-strength ceramic. More durable, more resistant to staining, and longer-lasting than composite alternatives. The preparation process typically requires two appointments: one for preparation and impressions, and one for bonding the final veneers.
Composite Veneers
Applied chairside in a single appointment using the same resin material used in dental bonding. They require little to no tooth preparation, are less costly, and can be repaired if chipped. They are less durable than porcelain and may stain over time.
Dr. Almaawi will discuss which option is more appropriate for your goals, the condition of your teeth, and how long you want the result to last.
What the Porcelain Veneer Process Involves
At the first appointment, a small, precise amount of enamel is removed from the front surface of each tooth being treated. A digital scan or impression is taken and sent to the laboratory. Temporary veneers are placed to protect the teeth and give you a preview of the shape. At the second appointment, the permanent veneers are bonded to the teeth, adjusted, and polished.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are veneers permanent?
Porcelain veneers require the removal of a small amount of enamel, which is a permanent change to the tooth surface. The veneers themselves can be replaced if needed. With proper care, porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years.
Will they look natural?
Yes. Each veneer is custom-designed in terms of color, shape, and surface texture. Porcelain has light-reflecting properties similar to natural enamel, producing a result that integrates naturally with your smile.
Is the procedure painful?
The preparation is done under local anesthesia and most patients experience little to no discomfort. Some sensitivity in the days following preparation is common and temporary.
