The molars and premolars at the back of the mouth have deep grooves and pits on their chewing surfaces. These areas are difficult to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush and are common sites for cavity formation. Dental sealants address this by applying a thin protective coating to those surfaces, sealing out food and bacteria before decay can begin.
Sealants are most commonly applied to children’s permanent molars shortly after they come in, typically between ages 6 and 12. Adults with deep grooves or a history of back-tooth cavities can also benefit. The procedure is quick, painless, and does not require any drilling or anesthesia. We provide sealants for patients across Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Hopkinton, and the MetroWest area.
How Sealants Are Applied
The tooth is cleaned and dried. A slightly acidic gel is applied briefly to prepare the surface, then rinsed off. The sealant material is painted onto the chewing surface and hardened with a curing light. The entire process takes just a few minutes per tooth and causes no discomfort.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are sealants only for children?
No. While children are the most common candidates, adults who are prone to back-tooth cavities or have deep groove anatomy that is difficult to clean can benefit as well. Dr. Almaawi will assess whether sealants are appropriate at your next visit.
How long do sealants last?
Sealants typically last 5 to 10 years. We check their condition at each routine visit and can reapply them if they wear down or chip.
Do sealants require drilling?
No. The application is completely non-invasive. No drilling or anesthesia is involved.
